When estimating lost household service productivity in personal injury or wrongful death cases, forensic economists frequently rely on national surveys of time use and surveys of wages. The “Dollar Value of a Day” is the most widely used single source of household service productivity metrics in the forensic economic community. Since it has been published for two decades and is subject to critique and review, it is time to take stock of its use and reliability. The “Dollar Value of a Day” has been widely accepted by courts and economists alike. It is a reliable resource in calculating economic damages, even if it is not the sole economic source.
